Demystifying non-traditional relationship structures and sexual practices: Don’t yuk their yum

Synopsis

This pre-conference workshop is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of diverse relationship structures and sexual practices. This workshop will explore non-traditional relationships such as relationship anarchy, polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, and open relationships, as well as sexual practices including Kink, BDSM, and fetishes.

Participants will engage in interactive activities, discussions, and role-playing scenarios to deepen their understanding and challenge common misconceptions. The workshop will emphasize the importance of consent, communication, and mutual respect, while also addressing the therapeutic potential of these practices for restorative sexual healing.

Special consideration will be given to the unique experiences of individuals from marginalized communities, including LGBTIQAPSB+, neurodivergent, disabled, and those with complex PTSD histories. The workshop will discuss the impact of minority stress, systemic barriers, and the ADDRESSING model (Age, Disability, Religion, Ethnicity, Social status, Sexual orientation, Indigenous heritage, National origin, Gender) to understand and address the diverse needs of participants.

Therapeutic approaches and theories such as Schema therapy and Parts work, attachment and trauma-informed practice will be incorporated to help participants understand and integrate different aspects of their identities and experiences. By fostering an inclusive and sex-positive environment, the workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support clients engaging in non-traditional relationships and sexual practices, in alignment with the Psychology Board’s Code of Conduct and Professional Competencies.

Participants will leave the workshop with practical tips for effective communication and boundary-setting, enhanced ability to create a safe and respectful therapeutic environment, and a deeper appreciation for the diversity and validity of non-traditional relationship structures and sexual practices.
