Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People within a cultural responsive framework

Pete Smith is a descendant of the Gamilaroi Nation of northwest New South Wales, where he currently lives on Country and is a senior lecturer (Indigenous Australian Health) at University of New England. His PhD studies have explored the meaning of cultural responsiveness and how mental health professionals can improve the ways that they work with Indigenous clients. Pete will present:

  • His work and findings from his PhD on cultural responsiveness
  • A conceptual model for practitioners working with Indigenous clients
  • A cultural responsiveness assessment measure (CRAM).

Pete’s intention in his presentation is not so much to impart information as to encourage us all to reflect on who we are in respect of that information, what are our personal values, and what we each bring into our therapeutic interventions.
